Due to considerable tax losses, South Africa’s government has decided to regulate online gambling. The legislation that is to control Internet gambling was submitted by the National Assembly, together with a memorandum where it was stated that interactive gaming is not included in the national gaming law, for which reason it has to be modified.
“This situation has resulted in considerable income losses for the Treasury and compromises the country’s reputation as a responsible global citizen and the reputation of the gaming industry in general”, the statement presented by the National Assembly read.
According to the report, some of the negative effects of gambling non-regulation in South Africa are crime, criminal elements, a poor protection of players, uncontrolled exposure of under age youngsters and gambling addicts, etc.
The project also aims to direct the social-economic implications of the interactive gaming industry by establishing an efficient regulatory frame, based on political objects in line with the government’s policy to regulate general gambling.
The amendment to the gambling law authorizes interactive gaming, software and equipment, player registration, as well as protection for minors and vulnerable people.
